Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Diploma Course
Who is this course for?
This course is specially designed for therapists who have completed their training in hypnotherapy,
who want to incorporate cognitive behavioural techniques and to adopt a more evidence based approach
in to their skill base.
This is an intensive 2 day course. No prior knowledge of CBT is needed.
Why learn CBT?
In recent months the UK government has stated that NHS patients suffering psychological
problems such as depression should be referred to a CBT therapist. Currently in the UK
there is a shortage of CBT therapists. Recent television news on both the BBC and ITV
channels reported that the government wants 40,000 therapists who can train in CBT. Now
is the time for you to expand your therapeutic skills to take advantage of the new demand.
During the past two years, CBT has become the first choice of therapeutic modality,
encouraged and recommended by GP's and the psycho-medical fraternity. It is now the therapy
of choice for patients / clients consulting with both medical and psychiatric physicians, and
more noticeably, GP's, who will encourage their patients to seek help from a cognitive
behavioural therapist.
Simply because, with research and over time, CBT has proved to gain superior results,
moderately immediate and certainly in the long term. It is often described as 'brief'
therapy.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a flexible approach in changing maladaptive or rigid
ways of thinking and feeling. It is not the events themselves, purely the meaning a person
gives them. Negative / anxious thought patterns that build over time, become a belief system
and fail to change. By identifying these negative or distorted perceptions, the therapist /
clinician can evaluate and change the way the patient / client is thinking and ultimately
feeling.
Because this therapy is pertaining to the client's individual needs, and focuses on their
negative / anxious thought patterns and processes, they will learn to become more flexible
and able to accept and adapt new cognitive skills. CBT therefore encourages better coping
skills and strategies and, more importantly, well into the future, creates and maintains a
significantly reduced relapse rate.
During the cognitive behavioural sessions a plan of action by the therapist is essential.
Providing homework for the client is particularly important, as the client is encouraged to
participate in their own therapy regime. Their dysfunctional way of thinking is often habitual,
24 hours a day, therefore it is essential they record and even change these thinking patterns
during this time.
This therapeutic structure is valuable, so the client recognizes that there is valuable
support and a plan of action in progress. This in turn leads to a successful outcome.
Feedback at the beginning of each therapy session, such as what has worked and what has not,
is vital. The emphasis is on collaborating together and to experiment and explore different
ways for the individual client to overcome their difficulties.
As the defined maladaptive cognitions are explored and identified by the therapist, a
flexible approach can be incorporated during the session within hypnosis, which leads
to a quicker recovery rate.
CBT can be used for many presenting problems, such as:
- Insomnia,
- Panic disorder,
- Anxiety states,
- Depression; Uni-polar & Bi-polar,
- Sexuel dysfunction,
- Eating disorders,
- Relationship concerns,
- Mood swings,
- Anger management,,
- OCD, and many other mental health issues.
David Kato PhD, a clinical hypnotherapist / psycho-analyst and behavioural therapist,
has been a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist since 1995, utilising these techniques for the
above problems in his Depression Clinic with great effect.
What does the course cover?
David has produced a comprehensive two day CBT diploma course for qualified hypnotherapists.
This course is ideal for providing clients with a higher successful outcome.
The morning sessions will be applied to gaining theoretical knowledge, including assessment,
planning action, intervention and evaluation skills.
The afternoons will be workshops, harnessing what you learn as you go along.
This will involve minor to major mental health problems including, anxiety states,
panic disorder, OCD, depression, insomnia, eating disorders, IBS, stress, reducing weight,
to name a few.
A plan of action is required for an individual client, therefore writing scripts for
the hypnotherapy sessions, and providing homework sheets, is an important aspect. Scenarios
also help to obtain an understanding of how CBT can be applied efficiently and effectively,
so you can create good patient outcomes.
If you want to tell David Kato in advance what problem patients you have, these could
possibly be incorporated into the course as a scenario.
The techniques you will learn will enhance your on-going therapeutic skills, ultimately
increasing your client capacity. This course counts towards your CPD.
As well as the attendance certificate, students
who wish to obtain the diploma, will
also be required to take and pass the CBT exam, which is in conjunction with the Academy
for Continued Hypnosis Education and Mindtech.
If you wish to take the optional examination there is a
£30 marking fee, payable on the day. The exam is designed to be completed at your
own pace at home.
