What is hypnosis?

The state of hypnosis is a totally natural occurring phenomenon, and one into which we can naturally drift on a daily basis. A good definition would be; "A deep state of relaxation and concentration resulting in an altered state of mind, which is induced by suggestion, given by a hypnotist, or by the person themselves". It is certainly devoid of the magical and there is nothing mystical about it. The trance state that we call hypnosis has been used for thousands of years. The study of primitive peoples shows evidence of trance induction, perhaps by the village shaman, essential to religious or healing ceremonies and rights of passage. Temple sleep or incubation was a psychotherapeutic technique used in ancient Egypt circa 3000 B.C. Today in some parts of the Middle East and Africa you can still encounter sleep shrines. The father of modern hypnosis may well have been Anton Mesmer, a medical graduate born in 1734. The name hypnosis, (Greek Hypnos meaning to sleep), was first coined in the 1840's by James Braid, a well-known Manchester surgeon. Although the hypnotic state may at times resemble sleep, this is certainly not the case. The state of hypnosis is most pleasant and a particularly relaxing, natural phenomenon during which a person can converse quite easily.

Particular problems may respond very well to hypno-analysis. These might include phobias of all varieties, anxiety attacks, insomnia, fears, sexual problems, eating disorders, migraine and nervous tension to name but a few.

What kind of therapy can I expect?

Therapy falls into two main types, suggestion and analytical. They are often used together.

Suggestion therapy

Suggestion therapy is used to produce a change in a behaviour pattern, such as confidence boosting, nail biting, relaxation, pre-examination nerves, business presentation nerves or perhaps enhancing sporting performance. Between one and three sessions may be required, possibly with a booster later on.

Sessions last approximately one hour. The fee is £40 per session. A booster session taken within three months will be charged at half price.

Analytical therapy

Analytical therapy is used to discover the original causes of psychological problems. Hypno-analysis can be briefly summarised as the doctrine of cause and effect. Every effect, (your symptom), must have a cause. Once this cause is revealed it is removed, bringing consequent relief of the symptoms.

Certain problems may respond particularly well to hypno-analysis. There is no need for you to capitulate to something inside of you but outside your own control. Provided that you can devote the resources required, time, effort and self-discipline, you can rid yourself of your problem. Results can be achieved in just a few weeks.

Analytical therapy usually requires between 8 and 12 sessions weekly sessions of approximately 60 minutes each. Any sessions of therapy required after 12 will be charged at half price

Smoking cessation

Smoking cessation takes only one session of approximately 1 to 1½ hours. The individual fee is £70. A free back up service is offered within the first month.

Individual Stress Management Programs

Individual Stress Management Programs can provide an understanding of some of the factors involved in stress phenomenon. An insight into determinants necessary to achieve control, happiness or personal excellence can be given. The individual can be equipped with the personal skills necessary to deal with both ongoing and future contingencies easily and with success.

An Individual Stress Management Program will usually take four sessions of 1 - 1½ hours over an expanded period of six weeks.

The Weight control program

The Weight control program enables a personal solution to your problem. Your excessive weight dilemma will be personal and unique to yourself. Resolution will lie within a variety of universal areas including innate conflict within, self-esteem, self-control, motivation and self-concept, confidence etc.

An initial consultation is crucial to the weight control program.

Learning Difficulties

I have been consulted by many people of all ages, from the young school-phobic to the graduate hoping to achieve the best in their "final hour". From the movement impaired the educationally labelled "low achievers" to the singers and performers who wish to excel and the sportsmen/women who wish to push beyond the plateaus that they have reached.

Through a variety of hypno-analytical procedures, conscious balances or repatternings you can maximise your brainpower. Integrating left and right hemispheres will enable naturally abandonment of reflexive movement in preference of more conscious choices of thinking and behaving. Repatterning deeper neural structures can help achieve goals requiring attention, organisation or motivation.

Acquire tools that can benefit you for life. As we move into the new Millennium there is no need to be harnessed by the restrictions of an old century.
